Magazine Reviews featuring The World Is Not Enough

Abbreviations used ... TWINE - The World Is Not Enough, TND - Tomorrow Never Dies , LTK - Licence To Kill, TLD - The Living Daylights, TSWLM - The Spy Who Loved Me, TB - Thunderball, GF - Goldfinger, FRWL - From Russia With Love & DN - Dr. No.

  1. Official Movie Magazine ... for TWINE is a 82 page American publication from STARLOG . Like most movie mags it's broken into different areas, this time 16 items called 007 Confidential Files on keys members of TWINE's production: producer Wilson, director Apted etc. in the first half and Pierce & the cast in the second half.
On each page there are some great photos from the movie and on set. It's a pity that the picture quality is of the 'grainy' effect lacking any rich colour like photos in UK publications. The front cover is the best quality but is already flaking in areas of the photo. An added feature is a 4 page foldout with the Art of 007 showing production drawings of different design elements ( e.g. the boat, the parahawk and Elektra's mobile office ) and on the reverse a photo of Brosnan in Bond & gun pose and a poor TWINE poster.
The magazine's detailed & researched items are by 2 writers, Joe Nazzaro & Kim Howard Johnson who both try not to give away any plot-lines. One of the many interviews is with the late Desmond Q Llewelyn talking about his new assistant ".. I don't suppose I can go on forever, that's up to the Almighty. So I've got an assistant on this one. In the next one, if I'm alive, I shall have an assistant as well." His item is accompanied by a cast photo of a sad & despondent Desmond but luckily he cheers up when posing with Pierce in another photo. It's disappointing that that there is not a full credit/cast list as featured in past Bond movie magazines.
If you're a Bond fan it a must have item to add to your magazine collection but it is only available in some UK fanzine stores and so you may have to pay more*.

    * Alas almost double the printed UK price ! Cinema Store's Dan Brown told me " ... magazine was priced at £6.95 as it has been specially imported, by air, from America. Unfortunately the U.K supplier of the magazine 'forgot' to order their stocks of the magazine so the only way we could obtain the magazine was to specially ship it from America. At this point in time the magazine is quiet the collectors piece because it was never widely available here in the U.K".

    TWINE Flicks

  2. Flicks ... this 'new' magazine ( replaces 'freebie' at cinemas which seemed to get smaller & smaller ) has a good & different TWINE cover. Inside a list of Bond Girls pops up in the opening Rough Cut's Name Games section. The New Movies section has a review by Ceri Thomas who ends the appraisal of TWINE as "a sleek and classy crowdpleaser. Bond is back" and given a 4 out of 5 star rating. Nearly a page & half is a photo of Elektra strangling Bond and adjacent is an interview with director Apted who admits "I like Bond - they are part of my culture..".
The main item Just Another Day At The Office ... has a 2 page opener with numerous TWINE photos with the writer Tom Henwood looking back at the Bond franchise and Brosnan's introduction. The 3rd & final page with more photos covers TWINE with Barbara Broccoli's plot idea, cast, producer Wilson's comments and a synopsis of the movie ending with the item's title. The following items has the writer interviewing the TWINE stars accompanied by 4 excellent Nigel Parry portrait photos. In his item with Pierce Brosnan titled "I Want This To Be Great", he traces his career and Bond influence accompanied by a page photo of the star standing in a relaxed, suited, smiling fashion pose with gun in hand. The photo's small bottom caption has Pierce quoted "I wanted to keep Bond simple, direct, honest, and as exciting as possible." Further interview pages with Robert Renard Carlyle ( plus 4 Top Bond Baddies section ), Denise Jones Richards ( plus 4 Top Bond Birds section ) and Desmond Q Llewelyn 's "I'm Not Ready For Retirement" ( plus 4 Top Gadget section ).
The magazine includes many TWINE phone competitions. In the music section, the TWINE CD is chosen as CD of the Month and given a 4 ( out of 5 ) star rating. Also a summary review of other Bond CD releases including Bond: Back In Action given 3 stars. The final 007 item has it's REWIND page going back to DN's release in 1962 and looking at other movies, Oscars and the Top 10 UK box office chart ( DN was No. 3 with The Guns Of Navarone at No. 1 ).

Bond Page Content: 16 * TWINE Photos: 21 ( plus 6 Parry photos inc. cover & menu )

  3. Sunday People ... when I saw the tv commercial for this paper's 007 special magazine, I was slightly puzzled why the movie clips used didn't belong to TWINE .. probably a Lethal Weapon ! With a TND photo of Pierce on the cover and a heading of PREMIUM BOND, printed below is The World Is Not Enough: 56-PAGE COLLECTORS' ISSUE ... alas the Bond items finish on page 32. The remaining pages are recipes & a tv guide.
The first item is The STORY OF THE MOVIE using photos and extracts from Iain Johnston's TWINE: A Companion, I'm glad that I waited until after the movie to read the notes otherwise it would have spoiled my enjoyment. This is followed by THE MOST EXPENSIVE BOAT CHASE EVER! with behind-the-scenes photos of the great London chase costing just £4 million. Next is BEAUTY AND THE BEASTS - two articles with an interview at Pinewood with Miss Richards plus photo ( as seen on the net cover ) and a brief interview with Robert Carlyle plus pointing gun photo, positioned below is a look at 3 other villains ( Goldfinger, Blofeld & Kananga ). Another page and half is devoted to GADGETS THAT HAVE Q-DOS ... which covers all TWINE's gizmos plus previously used equipment. Followed by SOPHIE'S SHAKEN AND STIRRED with a smiling Miss Marceau & white bed-sheet photo. Her interview is with writer Garth Pearce who wrote The Making of GE .. & TND but not TWINE, we see another side of the French beauty who used to turn up on her days off at Pinewood sometimes with her son 4 year-old Vincent. She is quoted " ... I still wanted to be on the set to enjoy the whole experience, watch the shoot, chat to the crew ... I love the technical side of film-making..". The final article is called SECRETS OF A SUPERSPY with facts about our secret agent compiled with the help of Graham Rye of JBIFC. According to one fact, only 17 of the 19 movies were 'official films' by EON with Casino Royale & Never Say Never Again being the 'unofficial' two ... oops wrong ! ( TWINE wasn't Bond 19 for nothing ). There is also a centre page tribute poster by Steve McGarry which is painted over Bond photos with cartoon captions, sorry not a collector's item.
It's a shame that this mag is so high on advertising and lacking in 007 content ( see below ).

    Bond Page Content: 14 ( out of 56 ) * TWINE Photos: 25

    People Total Film

  4. Total Film ... with a great cover of serious Bond, the main item's Do be careful, 007 features a double page photo of hanging Brosnan on crow-bar in the factory demolition scene. The item by Julian Chance includes a few bloopers ( last Pinewood bond movie was TLD not LTK and producers Michael G. Wilson & Barbara Broccoli have the same mum so can't be married ). It a report similar to Cinescape about Pinewood filming and comments from Apted & co. ( not Pierce ). On the page is a small photo gallery of actors / TWINE characters. Adjacent there is a page interview with Robert Carlyle, photographed wearing black leather jacket plus some hair. Included in the section are Classic Bond Movie Moments ( like featured in Rye's 007 magazine ) with GE's dive for the plane, TLD's opening Gibraltar drive & TSWLM's ski chase.
The next page Few People Do It Better looks at 007 strange song lyrics plus a reader's Bond poll - favourite film: GF, Bond ( Sean Connery ), Villain ( TSWLM's Jaws ) & Girl ( DN's Honey ). Also another writer watches the filming of the final sub fight scene calling his item ONE TAKE IS NOT ENOUGH. Finally We Need .. A Few Bad Men is a five step guide to hiring foot-soldiers for a Bond villain called Otto Zordax. The magazine advertises in Time Out and receives just 12 replies. Later in the book review section TWINE: A Companion is given a 2 ( out of 5 ) star rating which is disappointing.
The bonus is the free CD with computer wallpaper ( choice of 3 ), screensavers ( choice of 2 - the one that I choose displays all the Bond posters with the actors' name - Lazenby spelt Lasenby and the year of release - unfortunately when I later down-loaded the MCA TWINE screensaver it was erased as both have the same file name: 007.EXE ). The multi-media section includes different behind-the-scenes interviews like in The Bond Cocktail tv special. It's still a great collector's item with TWINE UK poster on CD cover, just a shame about the opening beer commercial.

Collecting 007 .. mini PB JBIFC TWINE JBIFC TWINE NL

  5. Collecting 007 - No. 16 ... came across this Winter issue of Collecting 007 at my usual London store. This seasonal magazine has escaped my previous attention but Editor and Collector Dave Worrall first published his magazine back in January '87. It is aimed more at the fans than his pal, Graham Rye's 007 magazine - I liked the double page spread of fans' photos and members' contributions.
His editorial, the first in 3 years due to personal problems, opens sadly with the deaths of Desmond Q Llewelyn whom he describes as 'a wonderful friend' and lesser known & 'dear friend ' Amanda Schofield from Eon's Publicity Department.
The mainly b&w 56 page publication ( with 4 colour pages on enclosing cover ) has detail reading on a number of interesting Bond related subjects, too many to mention due to the 3 year catch-up but the TWINE items include: visits to caviar factory set & Thames boat chase, UK Premiere/ After Party, promotion, products, France & Japan Premieres.
I was slightly confused by page headings of JAMES BOND COLLECTORS NEWS as was expecting the magazine's title ? It's a shame about the TWINE doll front cover, it slightly devalues the good content of articles on news, fan conventions, TND & TWINE.
Despite these gripes, it's worth every penny of the £4.95 price and gives a great insight into the Collectors World of 007. A must for your Bond library and I look forward very much to next Spring's issue - perhaps an article on the Internet ?

  6. 007 Mag 37 ... whether due to my late purchase ( before Feb's Auction ) or simply a late publication, this is finally JBIFC's TWINE special. Editor Graham Rye has produced another quality / commercial free magazine. His opener introduces new team members to help with his work-load and pays tribute to Desmond Q Llewelyn and Eon's Amanda Schofield.
The 48 page content with interesting photo layouts has TWINE's story-board of the submarine climax accompanying 28 pages in column form - perhaps 4 columns less would have provided space for another item e.g. London premiere.
Items covered: My gripe with this edition was on arriving home and opening the mag, I was disappointed with print elements. The magazine is now printed on thicker & better quality paper but I had to separate tops of pages 3 & 4 and 44 & 45 with a knife, bottom text alignment was cut off on some pages, page numbers come & go like the missing multi-national front page price tag and the helpful © date. Also spotted a duplicate question on a junket - perhaps these errors are due to late publication ? On emailing the Club and receiving no reply , they probably thought I was knit-picking - I wasn't. I just felt that their high standards had dropped.
Hoping that the next edition is more timely and error-free as this one but remains a must read for Bond fans !

  7. 007 Newsletter   No.20 ... having made another rare trip to London [ Sept '03 ], popped into a store hoping to pick up a new edition of the 007 magazine, alas the earlier expected delivery didn't turn up ? Now when the JBIFC went bust, this store got a lot of the old magazine stock including their newsletters. As only a short-term member, I never received their TWINE special which was sent out to members back in August 1999 ! So I picked up a belated copy for a reduced £1.50 ( $2 ). It's still worth a look as this 24 page b&w publication with colour front/back covers has plenty to offer, inside is the usual Rye editiorial but most of the text is provided by writer Lance Narayan.
The issue's pages breakdown as follows:
    1. stop press looks at Sony's failed bid to make a 007 movie and news of Garbage to sing the movie's song.
    2. It's Showtime with photos of Pinewood set ( including one of a visiting TND's Yeoh ) and on location in Bilbao.
    3. On Location: Swindon photo montage of Wiltshire filming during March '99.
    4. On Location: the River Thames - London nearly 2 page report/photos of Messing About On The River.
    5. ... continues with bottom page photo section of Who's funeral? with location shots.
    6. Roundup a detail look at casting.
    7. ... continues with location, media reports.
    8. Omega's messed up webchat and Brosnan's visit to Bradford to re-open film/tv museum.
    9. TWINE's cast listing plus large Bond & Renard tunnel photo.
    10. General News misc. media items
    11. ... continues with same, right column has mention of Fleming Golf Classic and start of Obituaries with Lionel Bart.
    12. Obituaries continue with Anthony Newley, Freddie Young, Robin Bailey and John Stears.
    13. Merchandise looks at misc. items and right side look at some fan websites - alas not included ?
    14. Christmas Came Early a look back at Club's Xmas Lunch in November '98.
    15. JB Returns to the Royal Albert Hall a look at Barry's London concerts and his book .. A Life in Music.
    16. Greg Bechtoff's Los Angeles Journal reports of LA going-ons including Connery's cementing at Mann's Chinese Theatre.
    17. Tomorrow Never Dies report of special edition US DVD and other releases plus a look at 2 strange 007 books.
    18. Midsummer Night's Doom/High Time To Kill over detail reviews.
    19. Beyond Bond news of 5 Bonds activities.
With final 3 pages given to Collectables, Classified and DB5 toy advert, it proved an informative late read especially with Narayan's references like "Tubby Coltrane, Babs Broccoli" and countless "Brozzas". Shame some of the information never made the magazine for wider readership.

    The Net

  8. the net ... the December issue's cover has curvy TWINE girl Denise Richards along with some 'Bond' article titles ( e.g. DOCTOR, NO ! - about health websites ) and a bottom heading of BE LIKE BOND which is the main item's title.
Inside another photo of Ms. Richards in the menu and when you get to the featured article you'll find a double page photo of Bond's DB5 and 2 posing models. The disappointing six page item, with The Name's Bond page headers, looks at 007 related websites by different categories; THE CARS, THE GIRLS, THE GADGETS & BOND PRIMER. The latter includes Probably The Best 007 Sites ... alas no sign of the B S. Also included are many familiar Bond photos.
In the Movies websites section, TWINE's official site is given a 4 star magazine award. Later photos of TWINE are used as an example to 'supercharge your browser' with RealPlayer & Quick Time plug-ins.

Bond Page Content: 6 * TWINE Photos: 5

    Empire

  9. Empire ... this front cover opens into a special fold-out double page with Miss Richards & 12 Bond Babes with a sub-heading of 00 ... BEHAVE !. On the opening page you'll find 3 more girls and a gun posing Pierce TND photo with a top heading Oh, James !. Try not to miss a laid back and smiling Maria Grazia Cucinotta from TWINE on page 5.
The magazine's main feature opens with a double page photo 'homage' to the Bond Girls called 00 Heaven ( thanks ITV ! ). The first item is 3 pages ( 2 text / 1 photo ) devoted to Miss Richards who is interviewed in New York and charts her short career. Each girl's profile opens with her Bond character name e.g. Christmas Jones and added sub-headings of alias ( real name ) , film & attributes. Fellow TWINE star Sophie Marceau gets a page and Miss Cucinotta shares her page with a KISS KISS BYE BYE column looking at actresses who nearly got Bond roles e.g. Julie Christie for TB's Domino. A further 7 pages ( not exactly 'massive' as the cover suggests ) look at the Bond Girls with added sub-headings: Bondian Badinage ( famous movie dialogue ) , Where is she now ? and Insider Info. A slight error with the attribute of TB's Domino who is the "daughter of assassinated oil tycoon Sir Robert King" of TWINE !
Helped by some good photos, it's an amusing look back at our favourite Bond Girls with other columns devoted to BOND'S BIFFERS e.g. FRWL's Rosa Klebb and suggested (?) names that never left the drawing board e.g. Cherry Popping. Of course there is a TWINE competition and a review of Ian Johnstone's TWINE: A Companion which is given a 3 star ( good ) rating.

Bond Page Content: 13 * TWINE Photos: 8

  10. Sunday Times ... Sunday Times this 88 page magazine supplement has an original cover by Robert McGinnis who has painted posters for 5 Bond movies. THE BOND ISSUE opens with RELATIVE VALUES which examines in conversation Desmond Q Llewelyn's relationship with his 2 sons. His younger son Justin, a champagne exec, provides his view-point of his famous father.
Next a page with a BEST OF TIMES WORST OF TIMES heading and a photo of a paint-brush spreading gold paint has Goldfinger's Shirley Eaton ( now 62 ) explaining how the paint job changed her life. Then writer Bryan Appleyard's item MARTINIS, BIKINIS AND THE AGENT WHO JUST WON'T DIE looks at the public's love affair with 007. The one page of titles is accompanied by a page of 11 publicity stills of Connery posing with gun for Dr. No in '62. It proves an interesting insight with contributions from TWINE director Michael Apted and producer Michael G. Wilson.
At last a magazine not devoted to Denise Richards as writer Georgina Howell's LOVE AND LET DIE spends time with French TWINE star and mother Sophie Marceau. Despite sharing a love of Guinness, Brosnan doesn't seem to keen about the opinionated star " Stunning -looking .. As a James Bond woman she fills the bill very adequately ... but will I be seeing her again once the film is finished. Possibly not." Visible Ink has a double page spread on 7 Bond posters ( some supplied by JBIFC ).
The magazine's TWINE attraction is called RAPID SPY MOVEMENT opening with the 'Bond escaping a ball of fire' photo and is an extract from former Sunday Times film critic Ian Johnstone's TWINE: A Companion book with interviews & photos. Another 007 competition is followed by an unpublished short story of 007 IN NEW YORK by Ian Fleming before his death in '64. The subject of the story could easily be the author and not his famous spy. Added on the end is a nice recipe for Scrambled Eggs "James Bond" ( it's for 4 people and you need 12 eggs ! ).
The spoiler for me is DRESSED TO KILL which despite a look at Bond's dress style by GQ editor Dylan Jones is ruined by some young and unattractive models in different Bond poses. Luckily next comes M-Cyclopedia which is an amusing A to Z of the Bond World and finally on the last page is an item called A LIFE IN THE DAY OF GEORGE LAZENBY. A relaxed George, 60, posing on his dirt bike on his ranch just outside L.A. talks about life after 007.
Overall a good effort spoiled by the adverts & those fashion models.

Bond Page Content: 30 * TWINE Photos: 20

    Men's Fitness

  11. Men's Fitness ... this December issue of the men's magazine is about fitness and other healthy topics so don't expect any quotes from any Bond or TWINE stars. Apart from a dated Brosnan photo on the cover and a pensive looking Pierce on the rear advertising that watch, The James Bond Special is 17 pages ( interrupted by one page advert ) of 007 items.
Inside the section opens with gun photo of Pierce from TND and a heading of JAMES BOND - guts, guns and girls. The first item called MY NAME IS BOD - JAMES BOD explains how ex-Para' and personal trainer Richard Smedley got Pierce primed for ... TND. He explains Pierce's work-out with detailed training routines and diets but the star still managed to drink his Guinness. The magazine also compares the physiques of the previous 4 Bonds.
Next writer David Bowker hires an Aston Martin DB7 and travels around France retracing the steps of 007. He stops at various locations to try out Bond's drinking & eating habits with references to Fleming's books.
After a double page of nine Bond film photos with witty (?) dialogue captions and a lower page heading of The Bond Girls and why we love them, we have 4 pages devoted to the Bond Feisty Felines. Finally we have an item called Shaken & stirred ( original eh ? ) which takes writer Ian Stafford to meet 2 film stunt-men ( one of whom worked on TND ). They train the writer to do a couple of stunts. In this section, apart from 2 large TWINE photos the only other mention of the new movie is a look at the hardware ( e.g. Bond's BMW Z8, boats, helicopters, watch and mircolights ).
Overall a different view-point of 007 but not 'enough' relating to TWINE.

Bond Page Content: 16 * TWINE Photos: 11

    Esquire

  12. Esquire ... as you see the curvy TWINE girl Denise Richards is featured on the November cover of this men's magazine. Inside there is a 33 page Bond special on gadgets, girls, cars, villains, alas I only managed to find 26 pages of Bond content ( plus one official advert for Bond's shoes ) that includes a difficult ( joking ) 007 competition ! After an opening extract from the book Dressed To Kill and half a page to composer John Barry, pages are devoted to each of the topics including an interview with Shirley Manson of Garbage about TWINE's song which is released on November 1 and the soundtrack album on November 15.
On the cars' page it is mentioned that 007 drove a moon buggy in Moonraker ... wrong Diamonds Are Forever and that the original Aston Martin toy car goes on offer at Sotheby's in December. Most of the photos in this section are supplied by the James Bond Fan Club.
Six and half pages are devoted to an item about author Ian Fleming called THE BOND FATHER by writer Eamonn O'Neill who has visited Jamaica and his home of Goldeneye. He has reproduced the highlights from Andrew Lycett's biography ( which I recently struggled to read ) and added his own personal views. There are different photos of the home ( one with Roger Moore seated outside in 1973 ) and Fleming relaxing. The writer stayed at the house which is run as a $5,000 a night hotel and scribbled a fine lines in the visitors' book next to Pierce's comments "Pierce Brosnan, no 5".
The final 8 pages called BOND BOMBSHELL are devoted to an interview and photos of Ms Richards in different positions ( none alas showing any real cleavage like previous Bond girls.. sorry ) and struggling to manage a smile.
If you're looking for TWINE items you'll just find just 2 photos ( one for the competition and another showing a hanging Brosnan ). It is revealed that "Bond's on-screen suited time in TND was 30% [increases] to over 80% in TWINE". Sorry that all folks !

Bond Page Content: 26 * TWINE Photos: 2

    Cinescape

  13. Cinescape ... picked up this 84 page American publication celebrating it's 5th Anniversary with Pierce & the 2 TWINE girls on the cover. Inside the September/October special edition there is an article under Rushes devoted to Miss Richards who describes her TWINE character, Christmas Jones as "strong and sassy" and reveals that her mum saw Goldfinger seven times !
More interesting is the report by Beth Laski & Peggy Loftus on the filming of TWINE at Pinewood Studios with good quotes from Apted, Brosnan, Richards & co. and plenty of photos from the new movie.
It looking good for November ! One small point please let Mr. Brosnan know that when I use B S it stands for Bond Supplement alas not what he uses it for.
