Magazine Reviews featuring GoldenEye
|
Abbreviation used ... TWINE - The World Is Not Enough
All magazines came out around the time of the movie's release, November '95.
- GoldenEye - Official Movie Souvenir Magazine ...
having purchased an old back copy of Cinescape ( see next item ) which included a pre-release report of GoldenEye,
I thought that I would dig out my copy of the official movie magazine for another re-read.
This 66 page publication from Titan Magazines was great value for just under £3 with plenty of colour photos from the Brosnan movie.
The magazine is broken down into 3 sections ( Character Profiles, Features & Behind the Scenes ).
The Character Profiles includes interviews with all the cast accompanied by some great photos.
Cinescape's Edward Gross provides many of the interviews.
The Features section includes James - for England with summary narrative & photos from the movie, a tribute to Derek Meddings who tragically died when doing post-production for GoldenEye, a look at Bond merchandise and finally a brief history of the movies called From Connery to Dalton.
Behind the Scenes section includes interesting items on filming ( director, producer and scriptwriter), the visual script ( storyboarding the movie ), recreation of St. Petersburg for the tank chase and finally a look at the new gadgets, weapons & vehicles for 007.
On the last inside page, unlike TWINE's official magazine, there is a full cast & credit listing adjacent to a full page glossy colour photo of Brosnan as Bond at the casino table.
A must for the collection but you've probably already got one !
If you haven't, start searching those memorabilia shops now.
- Cinescape ...
during a visit to London town* picked up this American publication which features a pre-release report of GoldenEye.
Senior Editor Edward Gross flew to England to visit the Bond set and is featured in a photo with a smiling Pierce Brosnan on location.
Part One of the 007 feature is called BACK with a BANG featuring a double page photo of fleeing Bond & Simonova fleeing from the exploding train.
The next five pages have photos of Bond on bike, Xenia in red Ferrari, Bond crashing through window, James & Natalya publicity pose and gritty shot of Pierce with rifle.
The editor gets to meet key staff & some cast for his location report and has an ending item called FREE-FALL which describes a daring stunt to kill off Xenia with Bond & Simonova aborting the plane without a parachute
( compared with stills from the opening Moonraker stunt ).
It was dropped as it "proved too costly .. too dazzling to simply discard and it might make an appearance in a future Bond" alas we're still waiting !
Also featured is MISSIONS IMPOSSIBLE ... 33 YEARS OF AGENT 007 - a five star guide to each of the Bond films prior to GoldenEye with cut-out movie images added to the text.
Part Two is his five page Brosnan interview with three large Brosnan photos from the movie and the star answering questions ( in bold type ).
I liked Pierce's reaction to getting the role ...
"I have celebrated in quiet ways. It doesn't have to be with a hundred people and lots of champagne.
It could be just walking down the street feeling damn good; sitting in the car feeling damn good that you've done it and you're there."
Despite being over 6 years old it's interesting to read his report & interview with Mr. Brosnan.
It's a look back at Pierce's successful efforts to help re-launch the Bond movie franchise.
* Now I found this mint copy ( in a plastic folder ) during a look through back copies of magazines in a memorabilia shop.
There was a copy in the Bond section with a clear-out price of £2 but I found another copy in the movie magazine's past issues section priced £1 ... so guess which one I got ?
Hey the bargains are out there !
- 007 Mag 29 - GoldenEye Special ...
The Club's magazine had good items in both the preceding and next issues about the film but this was designated the special issue and dedicated to Bond Special Effects expert Derek Meddings.
In days when the price of the magazine was half the current price of £8, it still was 48 pages but came with an extra 2 centre page pull-out colour poster from the film.
Alas it had only 4 pages of colour photos from the film with the remainder of the content in b&w text & photos. There are two tie-in colour page advertisements.
Meanwhile the opening two page item is titled GOLDENEYE - THE BEGINNING and covers the press launch back in June '94.
Next is 8 pages about the film's narrative with accompanying photos with brief career histories of each of the main characters e.g. Scorupco as Natalya & Janssen as Xenia.
On the final day of shooting President & Editor Rye got to interview Bond babe Scorupco ( some guys have all the luck ! ) covering 6 pages followed by further interviews with Production Designer Peter Lamont & Stunt co-ordinator Simon Crane.
The latter at the time of the tank wall stunt filmed at Leavesden and witnessed by Rye who
details the stunt in a 3 page item called DANGER - TANK ON THE LOOSE.
I liked Rye's reaction to being asked by nearby Producer Barbara Broccoli if he would like to see some rushes of the film, he replied "Is the Pope Catholic ?"
Another page is given to the film's song with photo of Tina Turner taken from the video shoot next to the lyrics by Bono & The Edge.
Alas when you reach page 37 you hit a brickwall with a 007 CLASSIFIED page with some fictitious adverts like LOST: Iguana, ... or LOST: One Gold bullet.
For some reason an almost identical page is shown again on page 45 along with other club & associate advertisements using up the remaining pages.
A pity as these final 12 pages spoiled an interesting read about Bond's return to the Big Screen.
This issue was also the first time that the Club used GoldenEye's No limits. No fears. No substitutes at the top of the front cover and seen thereafter on each issue.
